Mohair South Africa
Mohair meander launched

Mohair South Africa unveiled the unique Mohair Meander, a route which takes visitors on a journey through the picturesque semi-desert Karoo region which produces the world’s highest quality mohair.

The launch took place at the International Mohair Summit in Graaff Reinet, and coincided with the official opening of the Mohair Experience museum in Jansenville.

The Mohair Meander winds through the historic towns of Beaufort West, Graaff Reinet and Jansenville, eventually leading to the official capital of the mohair industry, Port Elizabeth.  The route will take travellers to several world class museums and mohair production facilities, including the renowned Jan-Paul Barnard factory in Alicedale. Visitors can watch the weaving process in action at the Umsobomvu Development Co-op in Middleburg, drop in at several working mohair farms, or buy some of the world’s top quality mohair products at Mohair Mystique in the popular surfing town of Jeffrey’s Bay. Along the way, travellers can stay in charming guest houses and lodges, or find accommodation inside the many game reserves in the region.

One feature not to be missed along the Meander is Mohair Experience, the country’s first ever mohair museum in Jansenville. With the theme ‘From the veld to the fibre and the future,’ the museum displays will follow a logical sequence of the actual production processes from shearing to yarn to end product. Also on offer will be an exhibit of historic articles, coupled with an educational experience of the mohair story.

The International Mohair Summit runs from November 3-8, and will bring growers, buyers, manufacturers, sellers, fashion designers and interior decorators from around the globe to exchange ideas and address challenges facing the mohair trade. For more information, go to http://www.mohairsummit.co.za
