A mixed bag for Mohair at the latest auction |
The second sale of the 2010 winter season took place in Port Elizabeth today (7 September 2010) with 134,551.7 kg on offer, with mixed fortunes the order of the day.
Deon Saayman, the general manager of Mohair SA, explained that adult mohair prices slipped further and brokers had to keep a considerable volume of adult mohair back at reserve levels. On the other hand kids and young goats experienced good demand.
As only 21% of strong adults were sold, strong adult prices are not quoted. Added to which there still seems to be uncertainty in the market for adult mohair to find a stable price level. Saayman says that one has to bear in mind that the market indicator for fine adults was also lower due to the fact that mostly the poorer qualities were sold and the better types were held back.
The overall sales clearance amounted to 57.5%, while the stronger currency also made competition difficult for the greasy exporters.
Compared to the previous sale, prices were as follows: # Kids (winter) up 7% # Young goats (winter) up 6% # Fine adults down 6% #Average down 8%
The third sale of the winter season is scheduled for 28 September. |
