The year 2019 saw Mohair SA increase its commitments towards sustainable mohair by partnering with Oritain, a scientific traceability company.

Who is Oritain?

Oritain’s is forensic science company based in New Zealand, UK, Australia, USA, and Switzerland.

Oritain verification demonstrates a commitment to high standards of quality and safety. It is a visible sign that shows the power of science is being deployed to help protect the integrity of a product. This is a powerful tool that links the origin claim on the packaging to the actual product inside.

How do they trace?

A products' origin can be identified using 'fingerprints' derived from the chemical compositions of plants and animals. These compounds vary naturally throughout the environment. Ratios of stable Isotopes (non-radioactive atoms of the same element that contain different numbers of neutrons such as nitrogen, carbon, and many others) are indicative of different regions. These Isotopes and element traces are measured by Oritain scientists.

Oritain has a fully operational fit-for-purpose database for South African mohair, which is available to brands and retailers on request. With greater transparency around the sourcing of every fibre, we are able to build on the trust with our brands and the international market.
